Director of Information Security

Bakersfield, CA

In this critical time for higher education, we are searching for a hands-on Director of Information Security capable of setting and implementing security strategy for a California-based higher education institution. This cyber security team has a reputation for strong fiscal health and is recognized as one of the strongest cyber programs in the state. 

The Director of Information Security will be directly accountable to the CIO and will collaborate extensively with senior leadership. They will have a seat at the table at the highest levels in addition to setting standards and influencing positive change across the organization. In this critical role, you will create strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and provide guidance related to significant cyber security threats, vulnerabilities, changes in policies and their organizational impact. As they continue to grow and expand further into the cloud, they will lead the technical program and the security team as they set the pace for security innovation for the remaining year and beyond.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Within the first six months: assess and improve cloud security operational practices, incorporate and improve security compliance for IT procurement of hardware, software, and services, and generate an IAM transformation across a large complex
  • Assess risks, threats, technologies, and architecture and make necessary updates and improvements
  • Regularly recommend improvement strategies for identified gaps
  • Develop, coordinate, and lead incident responses
  • Continually cultivate an IT security plan and associated policies
  • Monitoring and compliance
  • Implementation and end-user education and awareness program 
  • Coordinate with business units to facilitate IT risk assessment and risk management processes 
  • Monitor the external threat environment and advise on appropriate courses of action 
  • Participate as a member of the technical leadership team in the development, prioritization, and budgeting of IT security strategies and initiatives
  • Develop and communicate current IT security status, IT security strategies, and progress in security initiatives to key executives and the board of directors
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with security vendors and consultants
  • Build a strong security team and mentor junior and mid-level reports 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an IT related field
  • Five years of experience in IT networks, systems or security
  • Three plus years of leadership experience in a technical role
  • This person must be a self-motivated problem solver who is interested in leading teams and taking the initiative when it comes to getting things done
