Purpose of the job: 

The Distribution Planning Engineer in Analysis and Planning provides highly-skilled engineering services to assess power system performance under steady-state and dynamic conditions. Studies are primarily focused on power flow, transient stability, and short circuit analysis, but may address a variety of other concerns including economics, harmonics, and power quality. The Distribution Planning Engineer considers all aspects of power system design and operation to evaluate performance and develop recommendations to maintain reliability and efficiency of the bulk power system.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Power system modeling and analysis in the long-term, near-term, and operational planning horizons using power flow, transient stability, and short circuit software 
  • Assess the reliability and efficiency of existing and planned power systems; develop solutions where necessary to address concerns and maintain compliance with applicable standards and criteria
  • Develop and evaluate alternatives for the interconnection or retirement of generating units and other resources, elective transmission upgrades, and merchant transmission projects
  • Assess the reliability and economic impact of proposed and approved regulatory policies and future economic conditions
  • Analyze power system events
  • Develop and validate models for generating units, other resources, and controllable transmission assets based on field measurements
  • Develop study methods and resource plans to deliver studies that meet client schedules and expectations
  • Provide high-level technical expertise to other practice areas
  • Prepare and present detailed technical reports 


Education, Certifications and/or Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in power system engineering and analysis
  • Approximately 2-5 years of experience in wide-area power system modeling, analysis, and planning, including power flow, transient stability, and short circuit studies
  • Experience with power system analysis tools including, at a minimum, Siemens PTI PSS®E, GE PSLF or ASPEN software. 
  • Understanding of existing and proposed North American and regional reliability standards and criteria
  • Understanding of protection system design and operation
  • Understanding of equipment design and rating methods
  • Understanding of harmonics and power quality issues
  • Understanding of electricity markets, cost allocation methods, and economic and environmental regulations affecting the electric power industry
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent negotiation and consensus-building skills
  • Comfortable and effective working independently


Working Conditions and Environmental/Physical Demands:

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings at various sites within and away from the Firm; must also be able to work at a desk for long periods of time (2-3 hours); strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Ability to travel if required, including overnight travel and the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment in designated areas.



FLSA Status:

Salary, Exempt, Professional


Compensation and Benefits: 

  • This position pays between $60,000 and $90,000 annually and is an exempt position.
  • Benefits offered include company sponsored medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plan with company match. Also offered are tuition reimbursement, voluntary life, disability, critical illness, accident and hospitalization plans. HSA or FSA medical accounts and FSA dependent care and transportation/parking accounts are also available. These benefits are subject to employee contribution amounts generally set annually. 
  • Full time employees are eligible to earn PTO hours. 
  • May be eligible for discretionary bonus as determined by the company.
