The Organisation: The Satellite Applications Catapult

Role: Non-Executive Directors x 4

Remuneration: £13,500 per annum

Commitment: Up to 2 days/month (including preparation and attendance for up to 8 board meetings/year, committee meetings, and occasional site visits)

 

About Us

The Satellite Applications Catapult aims to expand the UK space sector and economy by leveraging satellite applications across various industries. Its work centers on three key missions: Beyond Earth, positioning the UK as a leader in the in-orbit economy; Connected Earth and Autonomous Earth, enhancing communication networks with satellite technology and enabling autonomous technologies;; and Sustainable Earth, using geospatial intelligence to address climate and environmental challenges.

To achieve its goals, the Catapult engages in business support, collaborative R&D projects, and efforts to increase market adoption of satellite services. Established in 2013 as part of a network of nine Catapults, it focuses on innovation in space-related technologies to support the National Space Strategy, promote economic growth, and address global challenges. Funded by Innovate UK, R&D, and commercial income, the Catapult reinvests profits to benefit the sector, particularly supporting SMEs by taking on high-risk projects.


Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Utilise your expertise to steer strategic development and oversee the execution of our strategic plan.

Sector Focus: Ensure the board consistently prioritises the growth of the space sector.

Ambassadorship: Represent and advocate for the Catapult within your network.

Financial Oversight: Monitor budgets and ensure effective resource utilisation.

Constructive Challenge: Provide independent and constructive challenges to the executive team and management.

Governance: Collaborate with the CEO and Chair to establish and maintain corporate governance and reporting procedures.

 

Desired Experience:

We are seeking to appoint a new cohort of Non-Executive Directors in the following areas:

Tech and Startup Support: Familiarity with the London tech scene and global innovation, including funding and scaling startups.

Academia: Experience in transitioning research into industry applications.

Space Data: Expertise in applying space data in commercial and public sectors.

Policy Understanding: Insight into Whitehall's policy and funding processes, with a focus on sustainability and regulation and defence and security.

Big Space Programmes: Knowledge of the cycles, standards, funding, and supply chains in large-scale space programs..


You will have the following Skills and Attributes:

Leadership: Proven track record in organisational and strategic leadership.

Governance Acumen: Strong understanding of the legal duties, liabilities, and responsibilities of NEDs.

Constructive Engagement: Ability to provide insightful, constructive feedback and challenge assumptions.

Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Team Collaboration: Ability to work cohesively as part of a diverse board team.

Ambassadorial Role: Capability to represent the Catapult effectively.

Technological Passion: A genuine enthusiasm for technology and its potential societal impact.
