Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Head Nurse uses a distinct clinical knowledge base for decision making in nursing practice and provides oversight and support to the nursing team; Nursing services are consistent with Georgia Board of Nursing rules and regulations.
  • Oversight of hiring, dismissing, and development of nursing staff.
  • Administer and document medications according to established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures nursing policies and procedures are efficient, safe, and effective and maintains accurate documentation of nursing services, including emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of ethics and professionalism maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly Health Center to ensure a safe physical environment, practicing standard precautions. at all times including maintaining adequate supplies, locked medication cabinets and maintaining sharps containers in appropriate locations.
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative relationships with school personnel, other nurses, students, and families in a professional manner and with appropriate frequency about school health issues.
  • Ensure all students have a 3231 Certificate of Immunization on file prior to the start of school.
  • Respond to emergency situations and administer appropriate first aid and emergency medications as needed according to approved campus protocols.
  • Works collaboratively to enhance the Whole Child experience with the following departments: counseling, chaplaincy, ARC, Sports Medicine, Division Heads, Athletics, Security and Fine arts.
  • Foster relationships with Atlanta area school nurses as well as the greater Atlanta regions.
  • Provides a private caring and compassionate environment; displays and models respect toward students, faculty, and staff; and serves as a student advocate, establishing and communicating clear behavioral expectations in the Health Center to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Reporting of communicable diseases to appropriate local authorities as required by law
  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  • Presents a professional and well-groomed appearance according to the dress code and adheres to the faculty and staff handbook.
  • May attend domestic or international travel or assign chaperone duties to nursing team members as needed.
  • Review all incident reports for students and faculty/staff and make appropriate referrals as necessary.
  • System administrator and proficient user in the electronic health record (EHR) system used by The School ensuring families have access to complete appropriate health forms annually.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
  • Ensures the following duties are performed prior to the beginning of the school year:
  1. Review and edit all Medical Forms, remove Seniors, update health related groups (allergies, medical diagnoses, etc), and review/approve information housed in the Once class assignments are made during pre-planning (ie, advisories and classroom teachers), create groups and generate allergy reports for teachers and dining services.
  2. Refresh field trip bags, check all AED batteries/pads for functionality and battery life, discard any expired medications.
  3. Coordinate with division leadership a plan to host a meeting with parents of students with Individualized Healthcare plans and appropriate faculty.
  4. Update medical information in the Parent/Student Handbook.

Position Requirements:

  • Active, unencumbered State of Georgia Registered Professional Nurse license; a BSN is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience; school or pediatric experience is preferred, Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Current with CEU requirements for the State of Georgia to keep their RN license active.
  • Participate in specialized pediatric continuing education/CEU's for asthma, diabetes, concussion, and other commonly seen pediatric disease/injury. Should a deficiency be observed by administration, these continuing education offerings will be.
  • Active CPR/AED/first aid training/certification.
  • The Head Nurse will be proficient in written and oral communication and basic clinical skills such as blood pressure monitoring, evaluation of illness, triage of emergency, and knowledge of basic pediatric care and disease.
  • The Head Nurse must have the ability to maintain a positive working relationship with school personnel, students, and families; competency in computer applications, record keeping, and organizational abilities; interpersonal skills necessary for overseeing the infirmary; and knowledge of fundamental nursing concepts, practices, and procedures.
