Systems Engineer - UNIX

SUMMARY:
Design and implement system solutions principally utilizing UNIX (focused on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Solaris) technologies and any other technology often integrated with other corporate platforms, operating systems and applications. Takes a technical leadership role in the group, assists with solutions to complex problems including long term strategies, assists and mentors other members of the team and peers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Installs, configures, and maintains UNIX (RHEL and Solaris, with occasional work on HP-UX and AIX) servers and related infrastructure systems in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.
•Troubleshoots and resolves complex system problems and proactively maintains expert knowledge in related Solaris and Linux.
•Designs the appropriate level of monitoring and performance as a baseline for all systems and proactively assesses systems for improvement.
•Ensures server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software & hardware solutions.
•Recommends and implements design modifications to ensure compliance with established IT policies and procedures.
•Researches reviews and provides recommendations to management relative to vendor-supplied software packages to support stated team goals and project requirements.
•Creates infrastructure systems diagrams and databases for certain enterprise subsystems (including architecture, hardware, software, and network components).
•Takes a technical leadership role in the group, assists with solutions to complex problems, assists and mentors other members of the team and peers.
•Translates business requirements into systems engineering designs, and once validated, proceed to design and implementation phases.
•Project Leader for all projects under their direction including those with a member from the Project Management Organization (PMO).
•Actively works trouble tickets, monitoring ticket queue. Acts as technical lead on the escalation of complex technical trouble tickets. Escalates tickets to other IT groups or management

ESSENTIAL JOB KNOWLEDGE
•Experience with infrastructure concepts such as servers, network, storage area networks, backups and datacenter management.
•Expert understanding of networking, IP addressing and routing, and TCP/IP, including Ethernet failover and trunking configuration.
•Expert understanding of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 and greater, Solaris 10 and 11, and VMware operating systems and their tuning and configuration, including their automated installation and extended configuration.
•Experienced with configuration and tuning of ZFS and LVM/ext3 storage management, along with Solaris and Linux storage multipathing. Expert-level knowledge of those technologies for at least one platform.
•Understanding of SysV and RPM packaging, up2date, and YUM.
•Expert understanding of DNS, DHCP, LDAP, SMTP, IPTables/IPF
•Expert understanding of the architecture of large server backup systems
•Moderate understanding of storage area networks and shared storage technologies.
•Experienced with Oracle RDBMS client and server installation, with basic database/SQL literacy. DBA experience not needed.
•Experience of Red Hat, Solaris, and/or Veritas clustering technologies, with expert-level knowledge of at least one of those.
•Experience with storage area networks and shared storage technologies.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE - Required
Bachelor's degree in info systems or related computer field and five (5) plus years of experience with systems administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE – Preferred
Bachelor's degree in info. systems or related computer field and seven (7) plus years of experience with systems administration.
