Position Location:

This role can be based in one of the below offices with a hybrid work schedule (4 days in the office, 1 remote day).

The Role:

As an AVP of Commercial Lines Underwriting, you'll provide leadership, guidance, and support to the entire underwriting team to ensure that company production and profitability goals are achieved by successfully:


  • Analyze, manage, and report on key metrics related to production, pricing, and profitability.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee underwriting appetite, guidelines, and authorities.
  • Create and deliver training on a range of insurance topics.
  • Handle account referrals and provide appropriate responses.
  • Engage in underwriting initiatives and contribute to their execution.
  • Oversee product development, including creating and enhancing new and existing products.
  • Ensure that products and rates comply with insurance laws, regulations, and align with company strategic plans.


Key Responsibilities:

To be successful in this position, an individual will perform the below duties (and others as assigned) with excellence:


  • Provide comprehensive consulting on all underwriting activities and processes within the department.
  • Lead high-level cross-functional teams to advance underwriting initiatives.
  • Stay informed and guide discussions on the underwriting marketplace, including regulatory trends and emerging issues (e.g., windpools, legislative changes).
  • Establish and promote underwriting best practices.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term underwriting strategies for the company.
  • Develop, implement, and execute operational plans to meet strategic and corporate objectives.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting and forecasting.
  • Conduct regular underwriting audits to ensure compliance with guidelines and assess training needs.
  • Design and implement training seminars and classes for employees and agents.
  • Monitor and allocate human and capital resources to align with company requirements and goals, as outlined in Commercial Lines Requests for Action (RFA).
  • Support Commercial Line employees by providing resources that help them meet quality, service, and productivity standards.
  • Collaborate with the Company Management Staff to shape strategic, tactical, and operational plans, and facilitate action plans to achieve company goals.
  • Forecast future resource needs for Commercial Lines and integrate these into planning, including managing consulting and contract service providers.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree, or equivalent job-related experience.
  • 10 years of underwriting experience required.
  • Experience in Property and Casualty insurance, covering lines such as Property, General Liability, Automobile, Worker’s Compensation, and Umbrella.
  • CPCU designation preferred.
  • Previous experience leading or managing a team or book of business to achieve profitable growth is preferred.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and implement strategies through effective tactics.
  • Ideal candidate should have extensive underwriting knowledge in Property and Casualty insurance and the capability to lead effectively through periods of growth and change.
  • Must have experience and enthusiasm for managing a portfolio of SME business.
  • Experience with technology to enhance business operations is crucial, including familiarity with third-party data sources and rules-based underwriting for driving decisions and profitable growth.
