As our Senior Health & Safety Specialist, you will plan, direct, and implement safety programs in the Mill, Mine, Surface Maintenance and Surface Operations in an underground hard rock mining operation to keep our production going and our profitability up. You’ll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. You will be called upon to work cooperatively with others as part of a team, and encourage collaboration, trust and openness among employees. To thrive in this role, you will conduct investigation of accidents, incidents and injuries and assist front line leaders and employees in establishing root cause and implementing appropriate corrective actions.


POSITION SUMMARY

Plans, directs, and implements safety programs in the Mill, Mine, Surface Maintenance and Surface Operations to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment by performing the duties listed below.


SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Include, but are not limited to:

• Act on the authority of the Site General Manager in matters pertaining to safety and health that require resolution

• Helping drive safety improvement by promoting a proactive safety culture

• Display ‘Due Diligence’ in safety and health matters and champion the implementation of the Safety &Health Management System (SHMS)

• Ensuring a field presence at sites on a routine basis

• Maintain the site Safety and Health Management database for incidents, investigations, hazards, near misses, action items from risk reviews, training and competency requirements

• Assist in the management, notification, investigation and reporting of incidents and hazards as required

• Facilitate and participate in risk assessment and root cause analysis

• Lead by example, modelling the behavior expected from all employees toward performing work in a safe manner

• Actively promote safety and health performance objectives to all levels of the organization

• Audit, review, revise and issue subsequent versions of the SHMS

• Develop, assist in the implementation of and review procedures routinely or as circumstances change

Departmental Responsibilities

• Works with Managers, front line leaders and employees to establish workable solutions to existing safety and health problems in the work environment.

• Implements and reviews safety & health policies and procedures in compliance with company and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations. • Plans and implements programs to train Front Line Leaders and employees in work site safety & health practices in alignment with established standards.

• Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

• Conducts investigation of accidents, incidents and injuries and assists Front Line Leaders and Employees in establishing root cause and implementing appropriate corrective actions.

• Conducts MSHA training, including 40-hour Newly Employed Inexperienced Miner, Experienced Miner, Annual Refresher Training, and Site-Specific Hazard Awareness Training.

• Assists with or conducts health and industrial hygiene surveys/sampling to verify compliance with health regulations and determine safe limits of exposure to potentially harmful materials or conditions such as temperatures, noise, dusts, fumes, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, and radiation, and implements or recommends control measures to minimize/eliminate exposures.

• Facilitates MSHA representatives while they are on site conducting compliance or other duties.

• Assists with the training of Surface and Underground Rescue Teams.

• Complies with attendance, safety, environmental and HR policies.

• Demonstrates: productive communication, cooperation, productivity, initiative, creativity, dependability.

• Assists department staff in preparing, submitting, and analyzing safety and training documents.

• Analyzes safety and training data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, or a related scientific or technical field, such as engineering, biology, industrial hygiene or chemistry or equivalent combination of education and 3 to 5 years of safety related experience.

Working knowledge of 30 CFR, Parts 47, 48, 50, 56, 57, 62, and 100 MSHA instructor certification preferred

Must provide or be willing to obtain documentation of completed 40-hour MSHA training

Ability to obtain ATF Possessor's Clearance

Preferred: Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
