JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Chemist is critical to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of chemical analyses performed in support of our copper mining operations. The Senior Chemist will lead laboratory activities, develop and validate analytical methods, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

·      Leadership and Supervision:

o  Lead and supervise a team of chemists and lab technicians in conducting chemical analyses of ore, concentrates, and other materials.

o  Ensure that all laboratory activities are performed in a safe, efficient, and accurate manner.

o  Provide training and mentorship to junior staff members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

 

·      Analytical Method Development and Validation:

o  Develop, validate, and implement analytical methods for the quantification and characterization of elements and compounds relevant to copper mining operations.

o  Ensure that all methods meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.

o  Troubleshoot and resolve analytical issues, maintaining high levels of accuracy and precision.

 

·      Quality Control and Assurance:

o  Establish and maintain quality control (QC) procedures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of all analytical results.

o  Perform regular QC checks, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

o  Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities.

 

·      Data Analysis and Reporting:

o  Analyze and interpret complex data sets, providing accurate and timely reports to support operational decision-making.

o  Collaborate with mining engineers, geologists, and other stakeholders to provide insights and recommendations based on analytical results.

o  Maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities, ensuring data integrity and traceability.

 

·      Compliance and Safety:

o  Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations.

o  Implement and enforce laboratory safety protocols, conducting regular safety audits and training sessions.

o  Stay updated on industry best practices and regulatory changes, adapting laboratory processes as needed.


Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field; a Ph.D. is preferred.

·      Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in an analytical chemistry role, preferably within the mining or mineral processing industry.

·      Proven experience in developing and validating analytical methods for complex matrices.

·      Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with experience managing a team of chemists or lab technicians.

·      Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.

·      Proficient in the use of laboratory instrumentation, including ICP-OES, AAS, XRF, and other relevant techniques.

·      Knowledge of quality control and assurance practices, including ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

·     Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.


Working Conditions:

The position is based in a laboratory environment with occasional visits to mining and processing sites.

Must be able to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, handling multiple priorities and deadlines.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel

Travel is not expected, but may occasionally occur for educational/career development purposes.
