As our Civil Engineer, you will work in multifaceted ways to support Infrastructure management, operations support, and environmental support. During infrastructure management, you will identify necessary expansions or deficiencies in existing infrastructure and plan, design, and manage construction of remediation efforts.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is multifaceted:

•          Infrastructure Management – Identify necessary expansions or deficiencies in existing infrastructure and plan, design, and manage construction of remediation efforts. May involve utilizing onsite staff, and operations resources, or may require consultants and/or contractors. Infrastructure includes:

·      Water Systems – Potable, sewage, storm water, and process water collection, conveyance, and treatment systems

·      Roads – Haul roads, maintenance roads, and bridges

·      Port Facilities – Deepwater port, barge loading facilities, commuter boat dock, and float plane dock

·      Tailings and Mine Waste Facilities – dry stack tailing facility, engineered mine waste storage

•          Operations Support – Provide technical support for in operations and maintenance of the site infrastructure.

•          Environmental Support – Provide technical support for the environmental group. Includes ensuring permit compliance and developing remediation efforts and improvements if environmental controls are deficient.

•          Mill and Underground Mine Support – Support other departments as needed.


SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Include, but are not limited to:

•          Display due diligence in safety & health, and environmental matters and lead by example to ensure the successful implementation of the Safety & Health Management System, and the Environmental Management System

•          Promote open communication and cooperation

•          Ensure that all employees, contractors, and visitors are informed of safety, health, and environmental issues on site and distribute relevant safety, health, and environmental information

•          Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are completed for appropriate tasks and participate in the process

•          Undertake safety and health audits and inspections and interact with personnel concerning improving work practices and following up on action items

•          Support all personnel in achieving and maintaining desired safety, health, and environmental outcomes

•          Recognize superior safety, health, and environmental performance to help increase commitment and participation

•          Manage, notify, report, and investigate incidents and hazards in a timely manner as required

•          Manage compliance with safety and health requirements and ensure issues are being addressed prior to commencement of work (such as permits completed, isolations checked, and tagging completed)

•          Manage compliance with federal and state environmental regulations to ensure a field presence on a routine basis

•          Verify that personnel hold the appropriate qualifications and licenses

•          Monitor the safe use and control of all tools and equipment

•          Promote and assist in the implementation of site safety initiatives and safety-monitoring tools

•          Attend and monitor pre-start and toolbox meetings, ensuring they are conducted and minutes are prepared, issued, and action items developed as appropriate

•          Assist in preparing and contributing to monthly safety, health and environmental reporting

Departmental Responsibilities

•          Works in a variety of disciplines such as project planning, construction, land development, geotechnical design, hydraulic design, soil mechanics, waste water treatment, or solid waste management.

•          Work with specialists on specific issues such as soil or ground water contamination or energy development and conservation.

•          Conceptualizes and designs the main features of a project, then performs and directs the work of drawing plans, writing scopes of work, writing specifications, preparing cost estimates and tracking systems.

•          Participate in surveying, site investigation, or construction inspection.

•          Sample and test soil or construction materials in the laboratory or the field.

•          Prepare reports on funding, scheduling, scope of work, environmental impact, risk assessment programs and excavation plans.

•          Reporting functions include capital project reporting, cost tracking, inspection and closure reports.

•          Integrates company policies into design and subsequent construction and maintenance activities.

•          A primary responsibility is to communicate with applicable stakeholders such as operations personnel, engineering staff, consulting engineers, and mine management, and must be able to accurately and efficiently convey ideas and information.

•          The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and in other circumstances as necessary.

•          Foster a strong safety culture, promoting and exemplifying safe work practices throughout the organization.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

•          Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field or equivalent work experience.

•          Prefer at least 5 years of experience in civil engineering work after graduation.

•          Strong project management, cost estimating, civil and/or geotechnical works, and project planning skills.

•          Electrical and/or mechanical engineering experience is a plus but not a requirement.


Competencies

•          Familiar with project planning and construction techniques.

•          Strong proficiency in MS Office and MS Project.

•          Ability to utilize various software, including SEDCAD, Civil 3D (AutoCAD), and GIS.

•          Open to learning, adopting, and implementing unique software tools and techniques that increase project management efficiency.


 Other Qualifications

Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training. Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.
