ENERGY & CARBON PRINCIPAL

 

PURPOSE

To provide commercial strategic support in the categories of Energy and Carbon, working closely the team to put in place processes to manage energy and carbon, effecting commercial agreements that optimize energy and carbon requirements and strategies which ensure reliable supply of energy and are aligned with the Client's climate ambitions and operations while supporting operational safety, cost and environmental targets.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·   Procurement of energy for the Project, primarily focused on electricity (renewable and non-renewable)

·   Represent the Client's interests to monopoly operators, energy market regulators

·   Provide feedback into the design and project delivery for optimized cost and energy outcomes

·   Provides commercial expertise to the energy and carbon categories to deliver the Projects greenhouse gas emissions targets and ensure optimal supply of low carbon energy

Commercial relationship ownership or support of sourcing activities to ensure business continuity and optimal outcomes, including:

·   A detailed understanding of:

·   Energy and Carbon markets relevant to the Project.

·   Key contractual terms of contracts and commercial levers

·   Legislative requirements of the surrounding energy and carbon markets and business impact (e.g. Carbon taxes)

·   Appropriate use of the mitigation hierarchy and use of carbon offsets to meet external and internal targets

·   Analysis of opportunities to optimize procurement across the category whilst minimizing risk, incorporating into overall portfolio driven category (mid- to long-term) and sourcing strategies

·   Building and maintaining effective relationships with market participants, regulators, NGOs, financial institutions

·   Critically evaluating project delivery model – insource/outsource; project management of external parties in effectively delivering to agreed project outcomes

·   Plan, strategize, and lead commercial contract negotiations with vendors for contracts

·   Engaging with key stakeholders across the business to seek endorsements & approvals

·   Completing required internal documentation and approvals in accordance with the Client's standards and policies

·   Lead and/or support initiatives for carbon reduction/offset projects

·   Develop, maintain & share market knowledge regarding vendors & innovation applicable to operations, especially focused on the interplay between energy and low or no carbon energy

·   Monitors expectations, understanding and application of Supply Category Management processes within the team to support compliance with local requirements

·   Supports cross functional team members to ensure delivery against performance targets

·   Key shared accountabilities:

·   Legal – Support for contract development

·   Treasury – Ensure contracts are consistent with corporate covenants

·   Technical Marketing – carbon price forecasts

·   Finance – financial risk management, budgeting and forecasting

·   Business Evaluation – energy and carbon cost assumptions

·   Decision Rights:

·   Sourcing Strategy and Plan to meet energy and carbon needs  

·   Supply processes & Supplier Performance Management

·   Recommends for approval all contracts in category

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·   Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Engineering or related disciplines

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS

·     Experience in developing commercial strategies and leading strategic negotiations, financial modelling skills, strong understanding of energy and carbon markets, stakeholder influence

  

EXPERIENCE

·     Min 5 years in a commercial/ Supply environment with a background in Energy and/or Carbon Sourcing / Markets in the United States is required.

·     Experience in the Arizona electricity market preferred
