HRU Technical Resources is seeking an Chemical Process Engineer to assist a large defense contractor located in Radford, VA.


Type of Role: 7 Month Contract (Extension OR direct hire possibility)


Schedule: 50% Hybrid work (M-TH)


Compensation: $87.39/HR

Description: The Chemical Process Engineer role involves multifaceted responsibilities essential for the success of projects within a leading defense contractor in Radford, VA. With a primary focus on process engineering, the engineer will be tasked with estimating process equipment and engineering hours, a critical aspect for developing auditable pricing proposals compliant with DCAA standards. Collaboration is fundamental, as the engineer will work closely with diverse project teams and communicate effectively across various engineering disciplines to ensure project cohesion and success. Furthermore, the engineer will play a key role in developing the scope of work for capital projects, a responsibility that demands strategic thinking and attention to detail. This includes creating essential process documentation such as Process Flow Diagrams and Heat & Material Balances, pivotal tools for visualizing and optimizing processes. Additionally, the engineer will draft and revise Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and develop interlock narratives, contributing to the comprehensive design framework necessary for project execution.


Duties/Responsibilities:

• Estimate process equipment, instrumentation, and engineering hours for DCAA auditable pricing proposals.

• Collaborate effectively within project teams and communicate with various engineering disciplines.

• Develop scope of work for capital projects.

• Create Process Flow Diagrams and Heat & Material Balances for new processes

• Draft and revise Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.

• Develop and revise Interlock Narratives.

• Identify and calculate Process Data for new instrumentation and equipment.

• Participate in Hazard Analyses.

• Conduct various process design calculations (e.g., relief, pump sizing, heat transfer).

• Provide on-site support during construction phases.

• Support I/O and interlock checkout in the field.

• Troubleshoot process, instrumentation, and equipment issues.

• Assist with startup commissioning activities.

• Conduct walk-downs and redline "as-built" process documents upon project completion.


Minimum Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience in Process Chemical Design.

• 5 years of engineering design experience.

• Proficiency in Process Flow Diagram development, Heat and Material Balance development, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagram development (P&ID).

• Competence in Pressure Relief Calculations.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).

• Professional Engineering License in VA.

• Experience working on major ($1M+) Capital Projects.

• Familiarity with ChemCAD Process Simulation Modeling, AFT Fathom & Arrow Flow Modeling, AutoCAD Plant3D, and P&ID software.
