Controls Engineer


Type of Position:

6-month contract position to start. Likely to be extended – good chance of ultimately going direct hire. 


Candidate Requirements:

This role requires candidates to be US Citizens or Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders). Candidates on CPT, OPT, H1B or TN visas are also not eligible for this role. This company is NOT open to corp2corp (c2c) or corp2hire (c2h). 


Job Location:

Kingsport, TN (relocation assistance may be available for non-local candidates). 


Compensation:

$75.00/hr to $85.00/hr (negotiable, depending on experience). Overtime paid at 1.5x over 40 hours.

Job Description:

HRU Technical Resources has partnered with a major defense contractor to help hire a Controls Engineer. This role will work as part of a team, will be responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the complete system, including PLC/DCS (Distributed Control System) controls, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and associated communication networks for process control and/or monitoring applications. This position works on capital improvement projects and chemical production support at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in eastern Tennessee.


Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to estimate, design, implement, and commission chemical modernization projects for the manufacturing facility.
  • Design and support all aspects of a control system (PLC, HMI, DCS, VFD, etc.), including hardware, network, and software configuration.
  • Ensure work done is consistent with control systems standards and procedures, including participating as part of a team as required to test and checkout system I/O, interlocks (safety and process), and automated control strategies that are part of the control system.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards, including completing all required safety training on time.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the customers supported.
  • Be able to manage, prioritize, and support multiple projects at the same time.


Skills, Experience, Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering/Chemical Engineering/Control System Engineering/Computer Science and 2+ years of applicable experience. May consider other engineering-related or similar technical degrees.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and Electrical Drawings.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and/or write documentation needed to program a complete control system (Functional Specification, Control Narrative, I/O List, etc.).
  • Experience working as part of a team designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and commissioning PLC/HMI applications with products such as Siemens PCS7 and/or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley for process or automation systems.
  • Knowledgeable in industrial network architectures, topologies, cybersecurity, servers, software validation, and simulation.
  • Experience working with Vendor Skids and integrating them into complex manufacturing/chemical processes.
  • Experience with variable speed drives, positioners, actuators, valves, and instrumentation used for chemical or industrial plant production processes.
  • Experience with multiple control system platforms including Siemens PCS7, Siemens WinCC, and Allen Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining Historian databases including Factory Talk Historian or Siemens Process Historian/Information Server.
  • Experience with a variety of control system communication protocols including Ethernet, Profibus, Profinet, Modbus TCP, and HART.
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives, including Siemens, Rockwell, and Eaton.


Work Environment:

  • This is a 1st (day) shift role that works a 4/40 schedule (10-hour days, 4 days per week). 
  • There will be occasional overtime in this role. Any OT will be paid at 1.5x.
  • Offer will be contingent upon a drug screen (which includes cannabis) and criminal background check.
