Anatomic Pathology Technician

Location: West Jefferson, OH and Columbus, OH (must be able to work at both locations)

Contract: 6 months with intentions to convert to direct hire

Schedule: Onsite (M-F | 1st shift) - Occasional OT during evenings, weekends, and possibly holidays.

Compensation: $21/hour with available benefits

JOB SUMMARY

HRU is seeking a full-time technician to work in Pathology to perform necropsy procedures, to trim tissues for histopathology process and generate data for various types of studies. This position is Monday through Friday and will require occasional overtime on nights and weekends; schedule may include holidays.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • TECHNICAL:

o The primary role is to perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals; to include gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling of specimens.

o Work with highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories.

o Trim tissues into cassettes for the histopathology team.

o Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and necropsy activities.

o Understanding and performing dilutions including mathematical calculations involved.

o Decontaminating equipment and materials.

  • EQUIPMENT/LAB:

o Act as lab technical point of contact.

o Laboratory cleaning and upkeep of equipment and space.

o Inventory, ordering and receipt of supplies.

o Waste management, operation of autoclaves, preparation of bleach and other decontamination solutions.

o Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data.

o Perform routine maintenance and/or calibration of equipment as necessary. Prepare, maintain, and archive equipment logbooks.

o Use electronic databases for sample tracking and documenting necropsy examinations.

o Operate routine computer programs and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment.

o Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software.

  • DOCUMENTATION/COMPLIANCE/SAFETY:

o Read SOPs, methods, facility guidelines, etc. used in workplace in a timely manner and adhere to these procedures.

o Record data and perform quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

o Perform timely quality control and/or technical review of electronic and/or paper data.

o Create and maintain study files in accordance with standard operating procedures, protocol, quality requirements and client specifications. Prepare and submit study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance.

o Recognize when technical operations deviate from accepted practices and prepare deviation reports as needed. Report observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations.

o Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements.

  • LEADERSHIP/TEAMWORK:

o Train and guide less experienced staff on specific tasks.

o Serve as technical co-lead on portions of studies.

o Work independently and efficiently in a team environment.

  • ANALYSIS/FUNCTIONAL:

o Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required. Exhibits sufficient technical knowledge to perform routine assignments. Demonstrated ability to operate basic equipment and follow standard procedures. Performs routine specified analysis of data.

o Verifies the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work. Is encouraged to make recommendations but has limited discretion when making judgments and completing tasks.

o Conducts standard as well as non-standard tasks under close supervision and guidance of more experienced staff. Keeps supervisor informed regularly on status of work.


THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • Associate degree in microbiology/molecular biology plus 1 years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP).
  • Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material.
  • Must be willing to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and 3 (BSL3) (biocontainment) environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection.
  • Must be willing to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.
  • Must be willing to participate in random drug screening.
  • Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.
  • Sufficiently medically fit to do work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties.
  • Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours.
