POSITION TITLE: Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice Statewide Manager (Remote)

Is This Your Dream Job? Founded in 2016, Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) is a multi-state organization that aims to win new safety priorities in large incarceration states across the country. ASJ partners with leaders and advocates to advance state criminal justice reform through policy advocacy, coalition building, research, education, and strategic communications. ASJ also represents diverse victims of crime to advance policies that provide more safety and help, and people with old records to advance policies that provide more redemption and freedom. Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), which operates as ASJ’s flagship state advocacy effort, has been leading state advocacy efforts to replace over-incarceration in California with new safety priorities. Additionally, Alliance for Safety and Justice Action Fund, a project of Tides Advocacy, is the 501 (c)4 arm of ASJ.
ASJ is seeking an Arizona (AZ) CSSJ Statewide Manager to manage AZ’s membership engagement activities for our Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice membership program, focused on organizing survivors of crime. The AZ CSSJ Statewide Manager will be the leading “face” of CSSJ in the state, managing offline member recruitment and maintenance, developing relationships with members, and ensuring members, partners, and allies are aware of our bills. As a key member of ASJ’s AZ team at a moment of tremendous need and opportunity, you will be responsible for working with crime survivors and organizations to develop their inherent power, connecting communities together, and leveraging that collective power for change using a team organizing leadership model.
The AZ CSSJ Statewide Manager will be responsible for identifying, coaching, and training individuals and building engaged chapters committed to taking local, district, and state action in support of public safety reforms; developing the leadership skills of members; and initiating and leading campaigns to advocate for shared safety for all.
This position will work side by side with State Advocacy staff to engage state partners and develop relationships with elected officials at the local and state level, represent ASJ and mobilize people at the capitol, and build our CSSJ chapter and member base in AZ. The work of the AZ CSSJ Statewide Manager will require someone who is knowledgeable in advocacy work, civic engagement, organizing, and who understands how to advance change in a trauma-informed way. How You Will Spend Your Day:
Build, Activate, Engage, and Develop Leaders and Members to Grow Chapters (40%)
● Build, manage, and maintain a membership base of volunteer leaders and members, organized
into highly engaged, active, and independent chapters.
● Conduct face-to-face meetings with crime survivors and organizations on a weekly basis to
recruit new members, assess for leadership potential, and recruit volunteer leaders to take on
roles within chapters and state advocacy.
● Develop, manage, and coordinate quality external chapter meetings and events with members
and partner organizations that meaningfully contribute to team building and the development of
chapter members, and build educational awareness on policies impacting survivors.
● Coordinate recruit, and facilitate monthly training for survivors and organizations using the
curriculum developed by Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice.
● Support the leadership and advocacy skills of chapter coordinators and survivor leaders by
providing ongoing coaching and development to ensure members are taking regular action and
that members are presented with opportunities to remain engaged for multiple campaigns.
● Work with chapter coordinators and chapter leaders to set goals around team growth, action,
and engagement, coaching them to successfully meet those goals.
● Manage and lead all phone banking and text banking campaigns in the state and recruit
coordinators and members as needed.
Policy Advocacy & Constituency Influence (40%)
● Collaborate with State Directors and the State Advocacy Division to develop and implement a
policy agenda that reflects our membership and legislative strategy, including shared oversight of
● Work with the State Advocacy division to garner support for bills (letters and otherwise), and
map out a plan for critical legislative visits for our members (in-district/in the capitol).
● Garner support for CSSJ across the state and manage relationships with key stakeholders and
allies in the state, including traditional and non-traditional victims’ advocacy groups, legislators,
stakeholders representing labor, education, victim services, grassroots organizations, and others.
● Ensure leaders and members are educated and empowered to take action on local and statewide
campaigns and can speak confidently about them to community members and decision-makers.
AZ CSSJ Communications (20%)
● Serve as lead for CSSJ internally by proactively communicating internally across divisions and
departments and externally to build a presence with media, legislators, and all stakeholders.
● Manage email, social media, and text messaging communications to all statewide members.
